When Do You Need an Emergency Tooth Extraction?
Not every tooth problem needs removal today. But some do. If you’re asking whether this counts as a dental emergency, here are signs we see most often in Scarborough.
You may need an emergency tooth extraction if you have:
- Severe tooth pain that won’t calm down with meds
- A tooth infection with swelling, pus, bad taste, or fever
- A broken tooth from a fall or sports hit, with the nerve exposed
- Deep decay past what a filling or crown can fix
- Wisdom teeth causing sudden pain, pressure, or infection
People often wait, hoping pain will pass. It usually doesn’t. Infection can spread. Swelling can get worse. Sleep gets hard. Eating hurts. If any of this sounds familiar, call an emergency dentist right away. Early tooth removal can stop problems from snowballing and bring real pain relief faster.
What to Expect During Your Emergency Extraction Appointment
Never had a tooth extraction before? Most people worry it will hurt or take forever. The truth surprises many patients.
Here’s what happens at our Markham Rd office:
Quick Exam & Digital X-Rays (10–15 minutes)
We check the tooth, gums, and bone. Digital x-rays show the full picture fast. We review your health history and answer questions. No rushing. No guessing.
Comfort First: Anesthesia Options
Local anesthesia keeps the area numb. You feel pressure, not pain. For high anxiety, sedation dentistry is available. Many patients relax more than they expect.
The Extraction (15–45 minutes)
Simple extraction: the tooth is visible and removed with special tools (about 15–20 min). Surgical extraction: used for broken or impacted teeth, including some wisdom teeth (about 30–45 min)
Aftercare Before You Leave
We place gauze, show bite-down tips, and review meds. You get a clear care sheet for home. Our goal is safe healing and fast recovery.
From arrival to exit, our Scarborough team keeps things calm and clear.
Our Emergency Dental Experience
Our dentists have extensive experience performing both simple and surgical tooth extractions, including infected teeth and impacted wisdom teeth. We use digital diagnostics and modern anesthesia techniques to ensure safe, efficient, and comfortable care. Every extraction is performed following Ontario dental safety guidelines.

September 7, 2022Best dentist I’ve ever been to and will be returning. I came in because I was told I had an infected tooth by a doctor and the doctor told me to... read more go to the dentist to get it extracted. I wish I remembered her name, but she was an excellent dentist and so thorough. I was really embarrassed because the doctor I had gone to about my pain acted as though I had some HORRIBLE teeth and it was the BIGGEST relief to hear the dentist that my teeth are okay. Won’t be going back to that doctor… Anyways, I had my x-rays done by the dentist, she tested every single tooth in my mouth multiple times before and after the X-ray since she couldn’t seem to find the issue through the photos. And she was honest! She said; “You have NOTHING wrong with your teeth. You do NOT need an extraction.” Right there, she had the decision to pull out whatever she wanted and claim it is infected. But she was honest, and spared the grief and shared a great disappointment about my doctor experience that brought me here which really validated my feelings and showed her care. This is where I define a professional from somebody else. At the end of the appointment, She admitted, she wasn’t sure what was going on with my teeth. But understood I was in a great amount of pain. So she gave me some antibiotics… Just in case and told me to go to a new doctor. What makes me feel good is when a professional is honest when they don’t know something. there is no shame in any profession to say “You know what, I actually don’t know.” So you learn that in the future so that you can answer that for somebody and educate them on something you didn’t know yourself because that is what a real professional does. I could tell immediately that this dentist went to an excellent school for her training just by the simple interactions we had and I hope she keeps that amount of professionalism up because it makes people feel really good. I’ll be back for sure! Thank you so much. UPDATE: The pain turned out to be an object embedded in my earlobe which was causing pain all down my right side of my body. Obviously that isn’t something they could have possibly diagnosed, but I appreciated the care from this dentistry!
